I am not a Nest expert, user, or salesman, but I wanted to share an actual story from one of my clients about the difference he experienced after installing his.
As with most everybody that pay monthly electric bills, we all want to try and find ways to reduce the size of the check we keep on writing. For most of us, it just seems like that just keeps getting bigger and bigger. My clients are always asking me what they may be able to do to help curb those bills. My response of course will vary depending on the situation. Age of the house, materials used in construction, and how well it has been maintained are big factors of what I respond with first. I always suggest low cost options first and then run through the costlier upgrades so they will know where they will feel most comfortable.
So, in this case, I had suggested a Nest thermostat as an easy start, since his house was fairly new, but with a very large one-story house with 3 separate a/c units, I felt it would make the biggest impact. I let him know that though there are many ways to potentially help, the bulk of his utility was in the usage of the a/c. He decided to implement that small change after doing his own research, and after a year he called me back to thank him for the suggestion.
He had saved his bills from the previous year and then comparing his current bills for the whole year discovered he averaged a savings of $200/month!! Way better than the advertised annual potential savings of $200/year. He was able to save the cost of the Nest units in a couple of short months, not a couple of years. So, with this information in hand, I have to tell more people. I understand not everyone will have the same dramatic results, but this is just a case in point that the technology not just lives up to the hype, but can actually far exceed stated expectations… and that is a rare enough thing to SHOUT about!! Again, I am not in any way connected to the Nest company or anyone that sells them, but an advocate for ways for the common person to do common since things that are not all that expensive to help make life better for you and everyone else.
